Mom’s Perspective: Delivering in the New Birthing Suites

By Amanda Barningham, RN

As a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Birthing Center, I’ve been quite familiar with the recent remodel and the exciting new features for expectant families. But it wasn’t until I delivered my second baby a few months ago that I truly understood how amazing these new birthing suites are.

Being on both sides of the experience, I went into labor knowing what I wanted. I had planned a serene environment that included aromatherapy, low lighting and a few different options for labor.

My suite had a deep tub that I could labor in. I took advantage of remote telemetry, so I could move and walk around freely throughout labor, without having to stay in a bed. I also used a birthing ball to help with my labor. All of these options were new to me since my first child, so I was happy to have even more choices this time.

The calm environment was exactly what I had pictured. The nurses and staff were really open to my wishes, and went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable.

The remodeled rooms had a spa-like feel with natural wall colors and trendy tile. The suite was modern and comfortable at the same time. The lamps had a charging station for my phone and there was plenty of storage throughout the room for our overnight bags. Our room also had a mini fridge so we could bring food from home. I noticed all the small but important details. They really do enhance your stay as a patient.

Everything about the suite felt like it was designed for me. All of this made for a great birth experience. When I’m back from my maternity leave, I’ll look forward to caring for you!
